Half Nuts, Lock nuts, (Chamfered) Hexagon Thin Nut

Half nuts, also known as a thin nut or jam/lock nuts are typically fitted with a spanner or ratchet with socket, often used in pairs or in conjunction with a hexagon full nut in a locking arrangement.

Half Nuts, Lock nuts

Lock nuts have a very crucial role in spite of its smaller size. These components are essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of bolted joints, especially in applications subject to vibration, load stress, or temperature fluctuations. In the reactors, capacitors and automotives industries, lock nuts help prevent failures and downtime. They resist loosening in situations of vibrations and torque. Hence they enhance the integrity of the structure. In certain functions they have also replaced full nuts – giving fastening grip while using less space.

Lock nuts are also reusable provided the appropriate torque is used. Hence it is common to see them used in sub-assemblies where they can be simply ‘unlocked’ and attached.

Chamfered or Unchamfered

  • Lock nuts from Delight are available in both chamfered (Type B) and unchamfered (Type A) designs.

Specialized Lock Nuts

  • Nyloc Nuts (Lock nuts with nylon inserts) are very popular. DIN 982/985 ISO 10511
  • It’s basically a hex nut with a nylon (polyamide) collar insert that creates friction against the bolt threads.
  • The nylon insert deforms slightly when tightened, preventing loosening from vibration.
  • Commonly used in automotive, machinery, and construction where secure fastening is critical.

Components of Nyloc Nuts

  • Hexagonal stainless steel or Mild steel body: Durable and corrosion-resistant—commonly 304 or marine-grade 316 stainless.
  • Nylon insert: The blue or white nylon ring inside the nut creates friction on the bolt threads, locking the fastener in place. In the case of MS, the surface treatment is done before fixing of nylon ring
  • Clear internal threading: Visible spiral threads show how the nylon grips the bolt to resist loosening from vibration or torque.

Nylock Nuts Functioning

  • Friction-Based Locking: The nylon insert grips the bolt threads, resisting rotation.
  • Temperature & Reusability:
    • Nylon softens at high temps (~250°F/121°C max).
    • Not recommended for extreme heat (metal lock nuts are better).
    • Can be reused a few times, but effectiveness decreases with wear
